Remember here I mentioned I had a few re-dos to do.
I finished one up this morning with a little help of my Cricut!

Ever have to re-do? March 10, 2010

85% of the time I end up loving the ideas I have.

I am happy we tore down the wall by the basement …
happy with fabric I picked for my kitchen curtains…
happy with the tree I painted in my dining room …

But, sometimes I like the idea by my execution is off.
Sometimes, I have to re-do what I just did.

I worked on two “re-dos” today:

1)  My dining room table:

Refinishing my dining room table was one of the first projects I blogged about.  I even admitted that I was a little worried about the stain.

Well, here is what it looked like this morning:
There were a few issues:

can you see it??  My table was fuzzy!  There must have been lint or dust in the air when I put the poly on … so there was all this stuck on lint like stuff.  When you rubbed your hand across the surface it felt bumpy and kind of dirty.  NOT GOOD!  I had in my head I would wait until Spring broke before tackling refinishing it.  This time – outside!

Then this happened:

The poly started to crack off.  Oh, no!  I was so upset when I saw it.  You can see where I rubbed my nail over it to try to see what was going on.    This I could not live with until Spring.    So today we took to sanding the almost new finish off.

Here is where we are now … waiting for the stain to dry.

My second re-do of the day is this:

Yes, I still want these words above my kitchen doorway.  But, maybe not so big.  A little smaller, and maybe a script.

So, I pulled out my blue … and we are here:

I bought some black vinyl to cut the words out using my Cricut.  One I get another coat of blue on, and let it dry I will add the words. (DONT LOOK:  you can see me and my work sweats in the mirror!)

I will follow up when my re-dos are DONE!

Kitchen Curtains … and my new favorite store February 18, 2010

Even though I said my next project would be my front room …. I did find myself skipping around a bit.  Maybe it was the HUGE snow fall we just had!

I recently discovered a blog that was local to me :  Pigtown Design
I love a blog that references places I know like Second Chance, Inc.
I also love when I learn something new.
Pigtown Designs introduced me to Debois Textiles.  Which became a true love at first visit.  Basically, discount fabrics … aka a little piece of heaven not far from Raven Stadium.

Here is my kitchen after a fresh coat of paint:
I like to think good bones … just needs some warming up.

This rug from World Market was my inspiration piece for the room:
(all my rooms start with one piece)

So after my first trip to DeBois I found this fabric:
For $4.59/yard!
curtain fabric

curtains 2

JUST What the room needed!  $14 in fabric changed the whole feeling of the room.  Warmed it right up.  I will post more pictures of the whole room together … it is close now … almost perfect!

P.S.  I will also discuss those sand jars on the window ledge.

Next Up: the front room January 14, 2010

Once I typed that I had to wonder, is that a local thing?
Does anyone else have a “front room”?
As you have maybe read, I live in a row house .  In some parts it would referred to as a  Townhouse.
But in my city, they are row homes.

So my front room, it is the first room you come into when you come into the front door.
This was my living room, but with the basement finished the TV and sofa moved down to there and I am stuck with an empty front room.

Growing up, my grandmother’s front room was only entered when walking in and out of the house.  You were not allowed to sit on the sofa, or turn on the lamp.  Basically it was off limits.

I don’t want exactly that feel.  I am thinking 2 chairs, a rug, and a mantle.
Plain, simple, pretty … but not stuffy and NOT off limits!

Now that it is empty, we have close to a blank canvas.

Here is where we are today:

The walls are freshly painted so the colors are set.  Remember from my dining room post, the whole floors color palate is coming from this fabric:

Here is the dining room chair fabric:

Walls color:

montgomery white weekend getaway

We also need to finish our steps, we opened the wall up when we finished the basement.

I am working on my plan and budget, then will get started!

Dining Room – done? January 13, 2010

Ever been here:  SO many projects going at one time you keep working and working and working but nothing is getting 100% done.  Well, the end of this summer this is exactly where I was.  So much going on at one time!

So I decided, finish one room at a time.

I started in my dining room.
I started here because:
a) I really wanted to redo my furniture  (see a few post below)
b) because it was not too much to do
c) it should not cost too much money

Is it done?
It couldn’t be, could it?
Holy Smokes … I think it may be done!

Here it is, in all its glory:

026 (2)

When I rehabbed my house (back in ‘07)I knew two thing, I wanted French doors.

Home Depot.  4 foot wide.  $317.  They were unfinished pine, that I painted White.

I wanted an illuminated Tray Ceiling.

086 090

We wired a plug to a switch.  The plug is hiding behind the crown molding.

The decor for my whole first floor is being inspired by the colors in this table cloth.
Blue, Green, Brown/Tan, little Pink.

                              Target.  about 5 years ago.

I also decided to paint a wall mural. (details a few post down).  Finally I had to yell at myself “Put, the paint brush DOWN!”  I just kept tinkering with it.

tree done

I loved the idea of a lamp in the dining room.  This is also where I decided to hang my memorial for Hope including her picture and hand and foot prints.

My book page wreath.  Inspired by Living with Lindsay.  Love it, it is perfect in the room!

… after looking back at the motivation, I may need to add more pages…

I feel good having one room done!

What do you think?

Rust-olem Hammered! January 12, 2010

I needed to tackle them.
My very plain switch plate & plug covers.
You know the ones I speak of, the super cheap-white-plastic ones.  The kind you can buy in bulk at Home Depot or Loews.

I started with this:

rustoleum black hammered

and of course these

switchplate covers

So after two light coats of spray paint I now have these.  You can really see the texture of the hammered spray paint in the picture below!  (see how crooked it is though, hubby will have to get behind there and make that part better.)

A few tips:

– keep the screws in the holes, and paint them at the same time as the covers

– do two light coats.  The hammered paint looks holey after the first coat

– once you hang them back up, you may have to touch up the screws a little.   I just sprayed a    little paint on a paper plate and touched up the scratches.  (you can see in the pic above where I did this, you cant see it with the naked eye)

Project Summary:

Hammered Spray Paint: $6.99

Wall plates: vary … some under $1

Something I learned from Martha January 7, 2010

Years ago, I mean like when I lived at home and my parent’s whole house was Duron Bone White … I saw this on Martha.  It stuck with me.  She said to keep your paint stirrers together, and use them for reference when you were shopping for accessories.  Here is mine:

I actually took mine a few steps farther:

  1. I note on the stirrer what color, brand, and paint type it is.
  2. I note date I purchased it.  Did you know paint can keep the same name, but the formula can change!  I learned this with my Benjamin Moore – Montgomery White , featured in the Pottery Barn catalog.  It changed from ‘07 when I first fell in love and this past December when I went to get a few gallons to fresh coat the house. So, you can see I even noted the formula on that one (second from right)
  3. I add fabric scrapes to paint stirrers for easy reference (far right).
  4. I added my floor stain too, so have an idea when buying furniture.

So when I head out to Joann Fabric, or to buy curtains, or to buy pillows I just grab this.  And I am certain everything matches.

I Heart Martha … sometimes!
