Ever have to re-do? March 10, 2010

85% of the time I end up loving the ideas I have.

I am happy we tore down the wall by the basement …
happy with fabric I picked for my kitchen curtains…
happy with the tree I painted in my dining room …

But, sometimes I like the idea by my execution is off.
Sometimes, I have to re-do what I just did.

I worked on two “re-dos” today:

1)  My dining room table:

Refinishing my dining room table was one of the first projects I blogged about.  I even admitted that I was a little worried about the stain.

Well, here is what it looked like this morning:
There were a few issues:

009

can you see it??  My table was fuzzy!  There must have been lint or dust in the air when I put the poly on … so there was all this stuck on lint like stuff.  When you rubbed your hand across the surface it felt bumpy and kind of dirty.  NOT GOOD!  I had in my head I would wait until Spring broke before tackling refinishing it.  This time – outside!

Then this happened:

011

The poly started to crack off.  Oh, no!  I was so upset when I saw it.  You can see where I rubbed my nail over it to try to see what was going on.    This I could not live with until Spring.    So today we took to sanding the almost new finish off.

021

Here is where we are now … waiting for the stain to dry.

My second re-do of the day is this:
017

Yes, I still want these words above my kitchen doorway.  But, maybe not so big.  A little smaller, and maybe a script.

So, I pulled out my blue … and we are here:
 020

I bought some black vinyl to cut the words out using my Cricut.  One I get another coat of blue on, and let it dry I will add the words. (DONT LOOK:  you can see me and my work sweats in the mirror!)

I will follow up when my re-dos are DONE!

Sand Jar Memories March 5, 2010

Many many moons ago as I looked through the Pottery Barn catalog I noticed a display wall.

On this wall – ledges,
on the ledges – mason jars,
in the jars – sand.
I knew I just had to do this one day.

Fast forward about 3 years … on the first trip I took with Mr. LoveCityLiving we collected sand from the beach at the lake.

We have kept up the tradition.  We are up to 5 jars.  They sit on our kitchen window ledge.

We contemplated doing jars from places without sand … like when we went to New York City or Disney World.  But, decided to keep it simple, just a sand and shell collection.

With my newly obtained Cricut I just made labels for the jars.  The name of the beach on the front, on the back I wrote the state we were in and the date.

Here we are without label … just sand in a jar.

Below:  If we find shells we put those in too!

Kitchen Curtains … and my new favorite store February 18, 2010

Even though I said my next project would be my front room …. I did find myself skipping around a bit.  Maybe it was the HUGE snow fall we just had!

I recently discovered a blog that was local to me :  Pigtown Design
I love a blog that references places I know like Second Chance, Inc.
I also love when I learn something new.
Pigtown Designs introduced me to Debois Textiles.  Which became a true love at first visit.  Basically, discount fabrics … aka a little piece of heaven not far from Raven Stadium.

Here is my kitchen after a fresh coat of paint:
I like to think good bones … just needs some warming up.

028

This rug from World Market was my inspiration piece for the room:
(all my rooms start with one piece)

So after my first trip to DeBois I found this fabric:
For $4.59/yard!
curtain fabric

curtains 2

curtain4

JUST What the room needed!  $14 in fabric changed the whole feeling of the room.  Warmed it right up.  I will post more pictures of the whole room together … it is close now … almost perfect!

P.S.  I will also discuss those sand jars on the window ledge.

Dining Room – done? January 13, 2010

Ever been here:  SO many projects going at one time you keep working and working and working but nothing is getting 100% done.  Well, the end of this summer this is exactly where I was.  So much going on at one time!

So I decided, finish one room at a time.

I started in my dining room.
I started here because:
a) I really wanted to redo my furniture  (see a few post below)
b) because it was not too much to do
c) it should not cost too much money

Is it done?
It couldn’t be, could it?
Holy Smokes … I think it may be done!

Here it is, in all its glory:

When I rehabbed my house (back in ‘07)I knew two thing, I wanted French doors.

           102

Home Depot.  4 foot wide.  $317.  They were unfinished pine, that I painted White.

And

I wanted an illuminated Tray Ceiling.

We wired a plug to a switch.  The plug is hiding behind the crown molding.

The decor for my whole first floor is being inspired by the colors in this table cloth.
Blue, Green, Brown/Tan, little Pink.

                              Target.  about 5 years ago.

I also decided to paint a wall mural. (details a few post down).  Finally I had to yell at myself “Put, the paint brush DOWN!”  I just kept tinkering with it.

I loved the idea of a lamp in the dining room.  This is also where I decided to hang my memorial for Hope including her picture and hand and foot prints.

… after looking back at the motivation, I may need to add more pages…

I feel good having one room done!

What do you think?

Rust-olem Hammered! January 12, 2010

I needed to tackle them.
My very plain switch plate & plug covers.
You know the ones I speak of, the super cheap-white-plastic ones.  The kind you can buy in bulk at Home Depot or Loews.

I started with this:

rustoleum black hammered

and of course these

switchplate covers

030

So after two light coats of spray paint I now have these.  You can really see the texture of the hammered spray paint in the picture below!  (see how crooked it is though, hubby will have to get behind there and make that part better.)

084

082

A few tips:

– keep the screws in the holes, and paint them at the same time as the covers

– do two light coats.  The hammered paint looks holey after the first coat

– once you hang them back up, you may have to touch up the screws a little.   I just sprayed a    little paint on a paper plate and touched up the scratches.  (you can see in the pic above where I did this, you cant see it with the naked eye)

Project Summary:

Hammered Spray Paint: $6.99

Wall plates: vary … some under $1

Monogrammed Tray January 6, 2010

It all stared when we bought this:

ottoman

Target: $79.99

We were going to use it in our new family room as a ottoman/coffee table.  The problem was we were not going to be able to sit drinks on it.  I decided we would need a tray.  After doing a little shopping I could not find one that screamed “buy me” especially when most were wearing $20+ price tags.

At a trip to Joann Fabric I found this:
tray

Joann: $6.99

My Plan:  stain the surface and paint the frame black.

After my coat of stain I discovered a slight problem.  Look at the picture below, do you see it?  See the yucky yellow stuff around the edges?  I know, I am SHOCKED that my $7 tray was not perfectly made.  So, the yucky glue would not hold stain.  Plan change!  I am going to add a border to the tray to cover the faulty construction.

After two coats of black paint:

I decide it needed a little something … so decided to add a little monogram action:

IMG00027

Kind of reminds me of L from Laverne and Shirley, but I am ok with it.  I like it, and look how good it looks on the ottoman.

Project Summary:

Tray: $6.99

Black paint: $.99

Stain: left over from another project

So, after posting my project on the nest I received some awesome advice!  I added color to the flowers, and added a few more.  Here are the updated pics.  Also, the flowers were on stems from World Market.
